Miri has long, white beaches, well frequented on weekends. Luak Bay Esplanade is a meeting point for kite enthusiasts. The beaches of Bungai and Peliau, less than an hour’s drive from the city centre, offer different scenery. Local fishermen land their catches here; savvy housewives turn up at the right time to bargain for guaranteed fresh fish, prawns and other seafoods. Miri beaches are idyllic, but it is wise to observe a few elementary rules. Large amounts of sun can be harmful. It is advisable to use sunscreen and wear a hat, and it is not advisable to go to sleep under the full sun.
Lambir Hills, Niah and Loagan Bunut National Parks offer abundant opportunitiesfor soft adventure trekking in the tropical rainforests. The headhunter’s trail, leading from Gunung Mulu National Park to the Bario Highlands, offers complete satisfaction for the die-hard adventure seekers.
